This scroll wheel method of entry really is a pain. Here’s an example. I have a subnet (172.21.16.0/20). I need to add a host at 172.21.31.30. Using this method of data entry I need to scroll past over 3800 host entries just to enter one address. Then I have many more in that same range. Ugh. Let’s use the keyboard or something – this isn’t a time saver.
Also when adding a subnet, selecting the mask (ie. /20) on the far right hand side isn’t intuitive.
I like your ideas (the calculator, organizer, etc)… but the user interface makes it unusable for me.
Many thanks for your comments, much appreciated. I see your point about scrolling past the 3800 hosts would be a pain, especially if you want to do it many times. I am going to look into the idea of having a text entry field as well as the scroller which could definitely help things I think. As for the adding a subnet, I thought it was intuitive because it has the slash there to indicate that you’re selecting a CIDR notation subnet.
I’ll definitely take these point into account for when I release the next version.
Your calculation of ‘max hosts’ is off by 2 in most places. Remember to always subtract the network and broadcast addresses from the count. Also it might be nice to display them in the list of hosts for a stored subnet.
Great application and it has been very helpful in studying for the CCNA. I am currently using the Subnet Calc version (non-pro) and would be interested in the Pro version if it were able to display the number of subnets available when subnetting a network. Does it perform this function or is it possible to do so? Thanks!
Many thanks for using my app! To some extent, Subnet Calc Pro does show the number of subnets available when subnetting a network. When you create a subnet, you can then split that subnet into multiple child subnets. There’s a function to split the subnet automatically (e.g. you have a /24 and want to create 4 /26 subnets in it) which will tell you the number of child subnets before you create them. So that to some extent will do what you want.
It’s an interesting feature to add to the app somewhere other than what I have mentioned. I will think about it for future versions.
Hi have just purchased Pro and have to say it is a useful app for my CCNA study.
The only bug bear is the alpha numeric key pad when entering numbers. Could this be substituted for a numeric key pad where IP addresses are entered? – it would be far less fiddly. Similar to the key pad on gymbuddy
Hi Steve, thanks for the comment and purchase of my app!
Sadly the SDK doesn’t allow a very good keyboard layout for entering numbers other than the one I have selected to be shown. There is the numeric only keypad, but that doesn’t show a return button for hiding the keypad which makes it a bit annoying to use in this circumstance. I’ll think about doing something about the keypad in future versions though – I could make a custom one for instance.
@James – many apologies for not releasing an update more recently. My plan is (now that the iPad is coming along) to make a new version of Subnet Calc Pro which has these features:
a) Fix all the niggling bugs people have commented on.
b) Synchronise with a web service where your data can be (optionally) stored.
c) Work on both iPhone and iPad.
Please feel free to comment with any other feature requests that you can think of and I’ll aim to get them into the new release.
As for special characters in the host names – I can potentially do this sooner. What characters would you like to see in there?
@Delio – Ah ha, I see. iTunes restore worked for me. Did you upgrade iTunes to the latest? Perhaps you should file a bug report with Apple for your problem?
The format is in an integer representation of the IP and the rest is self explanatory. If you email me your file I can explain more and convert it to whatever you want. My email is matt at galloway dot me dot uk.
Just purchased the Pro version. However there is just far to much work to enter any of my subnet’s I need to keep track of. I keep all on a spread sheet, any plans of having an import so you are able to do all the work in a spreadsheet & then import into Subnet Calc Pro? Another idea I had was, after you open the hosts list in the Orginiser have the ability to scan the subnet to see what is alive.
Keep up the good work, look forward to using it as the app move ahead.
@Steve – Import of current data is a feature that I really really want to get into a new version. Apologies that it’s not there just now. Scanning the local subnet is a brilliant idea and could definitely be done. I’ll add it to my ever growing list of TODOs!

Hi again Bob,
To make you aware, I’ve just implemented the IP text box on hosts and so that update will go out in the next release which I might do very shorlty.
Thanks for pointing out that issue.

Matt

Hi Matthew,
Not subtracting 2 isn’t necessarily incorrect. I guess that they’re not hosts as such, but having those numbers as nice powers of 2 is quite handy.
Many thanks for using my app.

Matt

Matt,
I noticed someone has already commented about using special characters in the host names. How far along is that? Of course I am using Pro v1.2.

Hi,
i’m looking for a way to import back my subnets and hosts info into the iPhone App.
Just before upgrading i exported the data
Thanks
@Delio – Unfortunately there’s no way to do this currently. I’m trying to add this feature though.
Although, if you upgraded then you shouldn’t have lost any of your data. You’ll only lose the data if you delete the app and reinstall it.
Ok, I’ll type for a wile.
… upgrade to 4.0 beta 3 = iTunes Restore feature not working.
@Delio – Ah ha, I see. iTunes restore worked for me. Did you upgrade iTunes to the latest? Perhaps you should file a bug report with Apple for your problem?
Hi Matt, here i am again
export data to mail
on the iphone:
subnets
10.10.120.0 /24
on my mail i have
subnets
1 168458240 24 ‘Test’ 0
hosts
HOw can i convert back to useful information
Thanks, Delio

HI Matt,
thanks for your info: i found a web page for conversion!

Delio
@Delio – excellent! I am planning a brand new version of subnet calc pro by the way which will allow file import and export properly.
